A Nice report...

Came back 2 weeks ago from %26#39;wall to wall%26#39; sunshine and blue skies. The joys of travelling out of season! Weather was perfect spring like sunshine during the day and quite cool at night.

Stayed in Rue Massena, near Place Massena. A great location for walking around from - not so good for parking, as it%26#39;s so hard to get a space - better to park in the car park and bear the costs.

Dined at Brasserie Flo - great charming staff and overall an enjoyable experience - food was %26#39;so so%26#39;. Dined in Aziari in the old town - a simple charming place. Dined in a great Italian pizza place in Rue Massena (name escapes me) but it is near Place Massena on the right hand hand side when walking away from Place Massena. Bought some food from Galerie Lafayette - thought the selection was very average. Most disapointing food was in Chateau Eze, in nearby Eze - maybe the chef was on his day off. Three of us and the same conclusion - very bland food, very good desserts (a great pastry chef at work) just great staff but wouldn%26#39;t go back again.

Did trips to trashy Cannes, charming Antibes (Picasso museum closed) Fabulous St Paul de Vence - don%26#39;t miss the Colombe D%26#39;Or and the foundation Maeght is an absolute must. Couldn%26#39;t get in the door to Matisse%26#39;s chapel in Vence.

Matisse museum in Nice another must - quite a bit to see - allow 2 hrs and the two parks nearby are worth a walk around.

Nice - cosmopolitan town - airport near town with idiot proof bus service into town. Loads to do nearby. Back soon!

Was the Matisse museum store open? I really would like to go this year as I%26#39;ve read that it has some really unusual reproductions not available elsewhere.

Yes the Matisse Museum store is open.

Fondation Maegh in St paul de Vence has a remarkable collection of prints.

cheers

Hi.

Thanks for the report - very informative.

Your interests sound like ours - we are booked in June and hope the Picasso Museum will be open by then.

How long does one want to spend at the Foundation Maeght? We thought we might spend a couple of hours one morning and then have a late lunch at Colombe D%26#39;Or...what do you reckon, please? How far apart are they? We shan%26#39;t have a car.

Didn%26#39;t you go to the Chagall Museum?

Thanks

Cheers

Response to Elaine 126.

Two hours is ample for the Maeght, and be smart, by making reservations on the terrace at the Colombe D%26#39;Or. It%26#39;s less than a five minute walk from the Maeght, but be prepared to finf it pricey. You truly should spend some time walking through the old town, although it%26#39;s quite hilly, but definitely worth it. Enjoy!

Thanks, Funkster - Will take your advice and get going early; sounds like a great day.

Cheers

Hi Elaine 126.

Agreed 2 hours is about right for the Maeght fondation. We did the Colombe D%26#39;Or and maeght in different days, so much art to savour, I didn%26#39;t want %26#39;information overload%26#39; :-)

We were in Nice and it wasn%26#39;t too far away, but depends on your timescale.

Check the Picasso museum in Antibes before going - the reopening seems a long way off. I read there is also another Picasso museum in Biot or nearby town - that might satiate your Picasso need.

Chagall? Next trip :-)

Thanks for replying, Baby2,

We are staying in Nice, too, for a week and want a leisurely holiday of eating, art galleries and wandering.

We%26#39;d be happy to go to St Paul on two separate days, but thought that the Maeght in the morning, then late lunch at Colombe D%26#39;Or followed by a stroll around the town, seemed a very relaxed day.

Do you really think it might be too much? If there%26#39;s a risk, we%26#39;ll take your advice and split the visits as we have plenty of time and don%26#39;t want to rush anything.

Cheers

Elaine
