Aix en Provence to Avignon

We have only 1 free day and want to know the best way to get to Avignon, other than renting a car.

|||

There are trains between the two cities.

|||

1. Take the autocar (coach bus) from the Gare Routière (bus station) to the Aix-en-Provence TGV station. Catch the Aix-TGV-Aéroport bus at Quai #4. (Price: 3.90E)

- Where is the Gare Routière?: From La Rotunde (giant fountain) take the Avenue des Belges, then the Avenue de l%26#39;Europe. The Gare Routière is on the left side of the street.

Schedule -%26gt; cg13.fr/telechargements/amenagements/transpo… (PDF - Adobe Reader required)

2. Take the TGV from Aix to Avignon%26#39;s TGV station.

-Book your tickets on http://www.voyages-sncf.com. Enter Aix-en-Provence TGV and Avignon TGV as your departure and arrival cities. The ride lasts about 20 minutes.

3. Take the navette (shuttle) from the Avignon TGV station to downtown Avignon. One should arrive shortly after the train. They wait right outside the station. The shuttle will drop you off

at the post office inside the city walls. (Price: 2.50E)

france-maniac,

Okay, I%26#39;m a little confused. Just to clarify, you take a bus from the Gare Routière to the TGV station. I get that, but then you take another bus when you get to the TGV station, to where you take the train or did I get that part wrong? I%26#39;m so glad I found your post, as I was searching for the better part of two hours last night, trying to figure out how to get from Aix to Avignon without a car :-) I had looked at the voyages-sncf, but didn%26#39;t notice that the TGV went there, so thought it was only a slow train through Marseille. I finally found something on the slow travel website about taking the TGV to Aix, but didn%26#39;t know what it entailed. I just thought we%26#39;d have to take a taxi to the Aix TGV station, but glad to know there%26#39;s a bus -- or a couple of them :-) We plan to take the train to Avignon, have a quick breakfast, then take the bus to St. Remy for the morning market, explore St. Remy in the morning, have lunch in St. Remy, then go back to explore Avignon for a few hours in the afternoon, and back to Aix in the evening.

I know it probably seems like a lot for one day, and we won%26#39;t get to see nearly as much as we%26#39;d like to, but we only have about 3 days in Aix, and then we%26#39;re heading for Paris. We%26#39;re taken the Eurostar to London from Paris and actually seen quite a bit in one day, so I figure that 2 small towns would be about equal to one big city, and the time spent in travel is much less.

Correction:

I could swear I typed %26quot;We%26#39;ve taken%26quot;, not %26quot;We%26#39;re taken%26quot; :-) What I meant was that we have taken the Eurostar to London for a day, so figured we could take a day trip from Aix to 2 small towns in the same amount of time.

Three steps:

Take the Aix-TGV-Aéroport shuttle bus from the Gare routière (bus station) to the Aix-en-Provence TGV station.

Take the train from Aix-en-Provence TGV to Avignon TGV.

Take a shuttle bus from Avignon TGV to downtown Avignon.

I hope that clarifies things a bit.

For Provence, that day is fine. I%26#39;ve visited three tiny towns in an afternoon. I%26#39;ve also done an afternoon trip from Aix to Avignon.

|||

Thanks so much for the clarification, and glad you think it%26#39;s not too much for one day :-) We really are looking forward to spending the rest of the time in Aix en Provence.

You might also check with the tourism office in Aix when you arrive. They have all kinds of day trips available by bus, some with guides, some without. I%26#39;m not sure if they have one that includes St. Remy and Avignon in the same trip, but it can%26#39;t hurt to check. That way, you just hop on a bus at the Rotonde, and the rest of your day%26#39;s transportation is taken care of.

You can check their website at http://www.aixenprovencetourism.com/

Click on the British flag to view in English, then %26quot;Tours%26quot; on the left hand side of the page.

keylimejet,

Thanks! I actually had looked at their website, and there is one to St. Remy and Avignon on the same day, but we%26#39;ve gone over possible dates, and I didn%26#39;t think we%26#39;d make it on that day. The tour is one day a week, on a Wednesday, I believe. I think our plans had us arriving on a Wednesday, but too late to take advantage of the tour.
