How do you get over jet lag?

I think it%26#39;s almost impossible to avoid jet lag altogether. If you arrive in the morning, do you stay up all day or take a nap?

I go check in at the hotel, unpack, take a nice shower then get on the schedule of where ever you are - go have a nice lunch, look around, etc. I do not nap - but turn in early that first evening!

I think each of us is different. My usual is to check in and get organized have an early lunch and nap until about 4ish.. I then walk until about 8 then have dinner. I have tried staying up but I am so tired that I basically feel sick and/or fall asleep in unusual places - on a chair while a friend was trying shoes on at Feregamo%26#39;s(?sp) and if shoes cant hold my attention nothing can. Usually by the next day I am fine.

Our plan left Toronto at 7:30pm and arrived in Paris the next day at 10:30am. We arrived at our hotel at 1:30pm got settled in the room and then took off exploring. You%26#39;ll be tired but the adrenalin rush should keep you going until you would normally go to bed.

I had checked this forum and the various threads on jet lag and I found the concensus was not to take the nap so that%26#39;s the route we took.

sometimes I take a shower, go out and force myself to stay up til 10pm - other times when I%26#39;m walking around like a zombie and have 10 days, I%26#39;ll indulge myself and sleep....

Just tried the No Jet Lag pills for 17 hour non-stop to Thailand, and they worked! Was acclimated by the 2nd day. If I didnt get queasy from the flight (or combo of pills - I have to take Bonine for air sickness), I would have gone out and stayed out the first night in Bangkok, but after a shower, I felt seasick! On the flight back, I got sick for the last 10 hours, so had to stop taking the pills, but was sleeping through the night within a week - last time it took 2+ weeks to get back to normal.

if they dont have them at your local drugstore, you can get them at magellan.com or magellans?

Are you talking about jet lag or tiredness?

There is nothing much you can do to get over jet lag - it is the body trying to deal with a change in time zones. Crossing the Atlantic I find that all that happens to me is I wake at strange hours. Certainly you really shouldn%26#39;t experience much in the way of Jetlag crossing the Atlantic west to east, all youre doing is having to wake earlier.

What most people experience is tiredness, because they only get about 5 hours sleep (if that) before they arrive in Europe. If you can sleep on the plane do so as soon as you are seated. Miss the meal (it will already be gone 10.00pm where youre heading) and sleep.

That way your only problem SHOULD be waking about 3 hours by the clock earlier than you usually do, and wanting to head to bed 3 hours later.

I find that only for changes in timezone over 10 hours does jetlag really kick in and it takes me a day to recover.

My friend and I were just discussing this topic as we plan for our first day in Paris in April. We will get to CDG at 1130 so it will be one-ish before we get to our hotel. Our plan is to grab some room snacks at the Monoprix, settle in, take a nap until 5 then head up to Montmarte for a stroll before going to dinner at our favorite restaurant then turn in as late as we can. The nap always gives us a bit of a boost and we seem to wake up WAY too early every first day (5am dying for breakfast) so if we stay up later, we seem to sleep in a bit. I also think I am going to get some breakfast items so if we do wake up we can have a quick bite then go back to sleep for a few hours.

I really think it is a personal choice of whether or not to tough it out and you just have to go by your own past experiences. That said, if I ever arrive at my first destination after 4pm, I do try to stay up and eat dinner then chill til at least 10pm.

Good luck!

I take Dramamine as soon as I get on the plane and try to get as much sleep as I can-- usually 6-7 hours. I%26#39;m tired when I get there, but I can usually force myself to stay awake if I%26#39;m walking around. If I can grab a shower before I go walking, all the better. By the next morning, I%26#39;m good to go.

Afternoon napping, for me, is a killer, but I also can%26#39;t take naps at home without having trouble sleeping that same night, so unless it%26#39;s dire, I really try to avoid it. The last few times I%26#39;ve napped in the afternoon of my first day, it%26#39;s taken me 4-6 days to get back into a normal pattern, so I%26#39;ll usually do what it takes to stay up. I%26#39;d probably be okay with a nap in the morning, but we%26#39;ve never been able to get into a hotel room before the afternoon.

I%26#39;ve found it helps immeasurably to have a flight that arrives closer to the middle of the day, in terms of having to stay up for less time, and in terms of being able to check in right away.

the last Paris trip I did nap when I arrived, but found after that I was getting up early, and staying up late. Usually I get up early and fall asleep early. There is something to be said for being able to stay up late in Paris!

Sure, its better to get to museums early before they get crowded but one can only walk so many hours in the day! I found I was out by 8am, rested feet for a few hours in the hotel around 5pm (while snacking on macarons; uploading pix; mapping out the next activity) and was back out until after midnight every day.
