Stay in Town or a quieter village?

We will be visiting Chamonix in early August (never been there before). The town looks very fun in a touristy sort of way (saw on a TV show), but I%26#39;m not sure if we should stay in the town of Chamonix or one of the nearby villages. I like a bit of action, restaurants, shops, etc. However, at night I also like peace and quiet and am not interested in night life at all--unless it involves sitting in bed and reading a good book.

We are a family of 5 with 3 teens and would like to find an apartment with plenty of space for a good price. Our plans are to visit the town of Chamonix, ride the lifts, picnic, hike, and possibly paragliding. Is it better to stay in town or nearby? What are the nearby towns like? We will have a car, so transportation is not an issue.

I visited Zermatt years ago, and I loved that town. Is Chamonix similar?

I have visited Chamonix in both the winter and summer and I prefer staying in town. You can walk everywhere, including to the lifts, there are many restaurants and shops, but with a small-town feel. Your teenagers, unles they too prefer sitting in bed with a good book, might also enjoy having the freedom of staying in the town and getting out a bit on their own.

To me this is a no-brainer, stay in Town.

Thanks, all. Will book in town. Sounds perfect for us.
