We are planning a trip of 3 or 4 days in the Loire Valley and wonder if Blois would be a good base for touring. Any ideas? Any suggestions about accomodations in Blois? Or other suggested locales? We aren%26#39;t gourmets, gourmands, or oenophiles... I think %26quot;cheapohiles%26quot; sums it up best. Thanks very much!

Sure Blois is fairly centrally located, as is Amboise.

Hi
Sorry for the dealy in replying...
Blois would be an excellent base for you here in the Loire Valley especially if you are here to visit the many chateaux in this area.
Happy to provide links to accommodation, can I ask what you budget is and what style of hotel/lodging you are looking for?

The Accor Etap Hotel in Blois would be a good central location for a non-gourmet cheapophile!

We loved Hotel la Roseraie in Chenonceaux. Very central for touring, and charming and comfortable. They have some standard rooms that are very reasonable. The owners, Sophie and Laurent, are SO nice, you%26#39;ll wish you could stay longer. You can walk to the the Chateau Chenonceau easily from the hotel. And there is a pool and free parking. www.charmingroseraie.com

Hi from Australia,
We are about to make our 5th visit to the Loire Valley in April 08. If you really want to experience this wonderful part of France - you need to stay at least 7 days.
We book our accommodation through %26quot;Logis de France%26quot; over the internet (3000+ regional hotels). They are always 1. clean, 2. typical Fernch (why would you go to France if not to try typical French lifestyle), 3 .Extermely friendly and helpful, 4. Treditional French Food %26amp; wines. 5. Value for money. (if you want 5 star US style accommodation - don%26#39;t bother.)
We stay near Amboise, as it is central to a wide range of Chateaus and historic sites. This year we are staying in a little village - Saint Martin le Beau, 8 km from Amboise. If you want to see an example of what you can get - log into %26quot;logis de france%26quot; via Google, then use the %26quot;Map%26quot; selection to find a list of accommodation, prices and booking options for the Loire Valley.
There is so much to see and experience in this area. In our opinion, the key chateaus are 1. Chateau de Chenonceau, 2. Chateau de Chombord 3. Chateau de Villandry 4. Chateau d%26#39;Aray-le-Rideau. The Cathedral of Chartres has some of the most beautiful stained glass windows - 30min from Loire valley, and Vouvray excellent wines.
Once wisited, this region will continue to bring you back - as it does us.

Although Blois is very conveniant for visiting the Chateau of Chambord, I consider it too far east for most of the other famous chateaux of the Loire. I think somewhere around Amboise or Tours is much more central.
|||
...apart from; Blois, Cheverney, Chambord, Beauregard, Chenonceaux, Amboise, Talcy, Troussay, Chaumont-Sur-Loire, Fougères-sur-Bièvre, all within 30 minutes drive from Blois
|||
I am talking about the major chateaux.... what about Azay le Rideau, Villandry, Ussay, Chinon, etc; all of which are much nearer to Amboise or Tours than Blois.

Hello, Thanks for the info. I am starting to save these Loire discussions as I want to go next year. We will be looking for 60 euros for a double too. My friend had told me that one chateau-she cannot remember which- had something interesting; the horse and carriage used to drive up into the castle on one side and dropped guests off in an upper floor and then drove down on the other side. Do you know which one? Thanks
