We are getting some good deals on hotels in Porte De Clichy. What sort of area is it? will i find inexpensive cafes and eateries nearby? maybe the odd grocery from where one can buy some basics?

I think it%26#39;s quite a long way from the centre, around Metro Brochant.
It%26#39;s fairly close to fabulous Montmatre, the Moulin Rouge and the red light area, if my memory is correct. We have walked around there but I don%26#39;t know what it%26#39;s like to stay there.
There are sure to be good food and grocers nearby.
Haven%26#39;t been much help but am pushing your question up to the top and hope someone with more knowledge can offer advice.

Porte de Clichy is in the 17th arrondisement. Be sure to ge a good Paris map and check this out. It is an area with many hotels (many are hotel chains:Ibis, Kyriad, Holiday Inn). There are many restaurants and lots of tourists. On one side you%26#39;re near Montmarte and to the west you%26#39;re heading toward an upscale area that leads to the Arc de Triomphe. You will be using the metro a lot if it%26#39;s your fist time in Paris and you want to see the sights, Louvre etc. because it%26#39;s a long walk to what I would consider central Paris. I%26#39;ve been to Paris a lot and always stay in areas that I consider central so I can walk to things. This would be the 1st, 4th, 5th $ 6th arrondisements. You%26#39;ll find many reasonably priced hotels on the left bank in the 5th and 6th arrondisements. Stay as close to the Seine as you can. The same goes for the right bank. The 1st and 4th arrondisements have some bargains--again, just stay near the Seine. Chatelet is the most convenient metro stop. It%26#39;s where all lines cross. You%26#39;ll find it in the 1st. Arrondisement (right bank) but it can be easily accessed from the left bank. The metro stops on the left bank are convenient too. Try this website for hotels:www.venere.com. It will give you maps, user reviews, etc. Good Luck!

Hello Kolkanan
Porte de Clichy is in the 17th ward of Paris, as a parisian and has a tour-guide I won%26#39;t advise you this area, quite far from the center, not very safe at night - even if Paris has made many efforts in this side - You can find good deals in better areas. Line 13 of the subway Place de Clichy is a hell, always over-crowded and once again, not so safe.
I don%26#39;t want to scare you, I%26#39;ve seen you come from India so you may be lost in Paris, as every tourist coming from far away. If I come to India I would choose an area more central, because I will be afraid to lose myself.
You can check in my profile for more informations, or PM me if you want, but, really, find another place...
Yours, David

It is the north of the city, nearby montmartre and the Abesses quarter (a kind of a village in the city).
With the metro (there is a station at the porte de clichy) and bus (better for sight seeing), you can go everywhere in the city. You can reach the historical centre with line 13 within 15 minutes (champs Elysee Clemenceau).

As you continue your research on the area, be certain NOT to confuse Porte de Clicy with Place de Clichy. Porte de Clichy has its own Metro and RER stop, and is near the Peripherique on the edge of the city, about 1km from Place de Clichy, which is where you%26#39;ll find the Moulin Rouge, and another 1/2km from the Sacre Coeur. You will spend a lot of time on the very busy Line 13 going into and out of the city center, where you%26#39;ll find the majority of major tourist attractions.

Thanks very much to all of you. Your replies have really cleared up my confusion. We were getting deals that seemed %26quot;too good to be true%26quot; in that area, and now I know why. Thanks will look at the places you suggest. Does anyone know the Rue de damremont? Is that a nice place to stay?
Our budget is modest ( the rupee converts badly :) )so please keep that in mind. And for anyone wishing to come to India and need help well Id love to be of help

Rue Damrémont is on the far side of the hill of Montmartre. It%26#39;s a much cuter neighborhood than Porte de Clichy, and has many restaurants and shops. Transportation to the centre is still a bit long, but be sure to check out the bus system. Line 95, for example, goes from that area through the center of Paris, and runs pretty late at night.
