I know it is rather off topic but it always amazes me how little crime there is in Nice and on the Riviera in general. I have spent a total of about a year in and around Nice in the last decade. I walk around at all hours, often get the train after 11.00pm and take absolutely no precautions against theft. On more than one occasion I have left things such as cameras and sunglasses in shops and cafes and they were always there when I went back, once after a two week gap.

There is surely no mystery as to why beggars are attracted to Nice; a warm climate and the presence of thousands of prosperous tourists who are likely to be feeling generous. I had a stroll through the West End of London yesterday, on a very chilly day and there were just as many beggars if not more than you find in Nice. I have met aggressive beggars in London but never in Nice.

Perhaps it helps that I don%26#39;t look too prosperous? I take my laundry to a place near the port and one lunchtime last summer I was sitting waiting for it to open, with a large bag full of sheets, looking at the super yachts and eating a sandwich, when someone handed me a two euro coin. I was completely baffled at this until I realised that the kind passer-by had thought that the scruffy man with the plastic bag was homeless. The two euros came in handy later in the day when I treated ny nephew to afternoon tea in the garden of the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat. If only the person who gave me the coin had been there too!
