Rude Hotel Staff

The last two TA posts from my trip watch were from people who have stayed at the hotel I am staying at in March,(Hotel Minerve)and have complained that the staff was rude. So what does that mean? They don%26#39;t help you, they ignore you, or as my kids at school say %26quot;have an attitude%26quot;. Just want to be prepared.

|||

Gosh I hope this isn%26#39;t a pattern that continues. I have booked the Minerve for a week in September. We chose this hotel because of its location, the fact that it is a non-smoking hotel and the good reviews previously posted. I am anxiously awaiting your review of the hotel in March.

I%26#39;ve been to Paris every year, sometimes twice, since 1996 (except 2000, 2003) so I%26#39;ll give my thoughts on %26#39;hotel staff rudeness%26#39;, it%26#39;s a bit of a rant.

Minerve and many others like it are small hotels - they don%26#39;t have a concierge or someone to %26#39;help me plan the next stage of my trip%26#39; (what?? was this customer thinking?) Helping plan the next stage of a trip is quite different than making a restaurant reservation. (this comment is based on what one reviewer actually said).

The person from London picked at the change in staff at the desk (so??) and thath possibly the metro can be heard/felt rumbling - - is that the fault of the hotel? and small rooms, like London hotels don%26#39;t have same? I%26#39;d toss that review out without giving it a moment%26#39;s consideration. (rooms might be small, but have you read about many other hotels? same thing. You can%26#39;t dis Minerve for it).

If you want to economize and stay at moderately priced hotels, then give your expectations of what the limited staff at such places can truly do for you. MAKE YOUR OWN TRAVEL PLANS - take care of your own airport transportation, research restaurants yourself, plan your sightseeing and how to get around. Keep your requests to those you truly need help with, such as help with language (restaurant reservations - even these you can do by stopping by in person, or emailing or using website if there is one), or calling a doctor.

Read enough reviews to know that ALL ELEVATORS ARE TINY, not just the one hotel you stayed in, LOL. Learn how to sit in a tub and rinse with the nozzle, as opposed to standing in the tub and trying to take a shower - it ISN%26#39;T a shower, people. Tell them that you want the breakfast or you don%26#39;t want the breakfast, in advance. If breakfast is served from 7am-9:30am, don%26#39;t show up at 9:25.

Hope these comments help someone else - I feel better now!

|||

%26quot;....then REDUCE your expectations...%26quot; I meant.

|||

I%26#39;m sorry...but have you gone through the MNAY glowing reviews and comments of past gueests of the HÔTEL MINERVE over the past few years ?? Which of the many reviews citing the friendly and helpful staff did you find less valid than the one negative ?? It would appear that you are dwelling on a tree...rather than the forrest.

As a cross reference, also check the comments for the Familia Hotel located just next door to the Minerve. Both hotels are owned and actively managed by the same family.

So here%26#39;s what you do. Go back to those 127 different reveiews and toss out 25% of the most glowing...and then toss out 25% of the least glowing/.//and the 50% of what reamins is as close as you%26#39;re likely to get to any real %26#39;..truth..%26#39; about this--or any other--hotel. Make your selection based on this.

Hi --

I%26#39;m on travelnutty%26#39;s side.

The small room complaint is as irksome as the inability to tell the difference between advise (a verb) and advice (a noun).

Rooms in Europe are small. I can%26#39;t imagine how anyone could have missed that fact. That%26#39;s the way it is. If you don%26#39;t like small rooms, go to Cleveland instead of Rome or Paris or London.

If you wish to have 5 star service, stay in a 5 star hotel. It costs an extra three or four hundred dollars (or more) a night, but that%26#39;s what it costs. If you were too cheap to pay the rate, don%26#39;t complain that you only got what you paid for.

|||

Reference lifts (or elevators). When most of the central hotels were built lifts had not been invented, but the hotels contained lovely staircases which went round a central well. The lifts were shoehorned in later down the middle. Sometimes you can see where the banisters were cut away to make room. SO you have a lift in which two large persons and bags DO NOT fit LOL

Thanks travelnutty and all, you%26#39;ve made me feel better.

It all comes down to expectations. I stayed at the hotel du Marais, which must be one of the best value hotels in the Marais, and the staff were all fine with me. However, I notice there have been a couple of recent reviews complaining about rude staff. Reading between the lines of the stories told you can%26#39;t help wondering who initiated the rudeness but whatever the reason, I think some people are so used to being treated like little kings in some hotels that the more straightforward and equal approach in a small Paris hotel comes as a bit of a shock. They do not see their role as pampering you, they just want to get on with their work while you get on with your holiday. Some visitors see it as indifference while the staff just see it as giving the customer what they paid for.

|||

I couldn%26#39;t have put it better, Wansteader. I absolutely agree.

Travelnutty - excellent post, could not have said it better myself!
