10th arrondissement

My friend and I are backpacking Europe this summer and she has a cousin who has a friend in Paris. He lives in the 10th and for money%26#39;s sake she would like to stay with him for the four nights we are there. However, he lives in the 10th and I%26#39;ve heard its not the best area. We are two young women and I would like to go out at night without having to worry about our return trip home. I don%26#39;t know exactly where in the 10th he lives. Personally, I%26#39;d rather stay where I want and spend the money on a hostel. Is it worth it to talk my friend out of this or is the area not so bad? Thanks!

You will be fine - it is a very lively arrondissement and full of young people of all walks of life! You will quickly spot a few areas to stay away from. Stay in areas that are busy and if you see rowdy crowds, cross the street and walk on other sidewalk.

10th area is Republique-Jacques Bonsergent area. This area is not particularly unsafe, but there is - except Republique Place - not many lights at night I think. The area is very dark. But it is not - unsafe - , like 18th or 19 th area.
