Just booked flights for a long weekend at the end of April in Carcassonne - which area is it best to stay in, the medieval city or not? are they side by side or a distance apart on foot?

Inside the old city walls is the best (from my point of view). For good hotels inside the city walls , try the Best Western Le Donjon les Ramparts --or-- very very nice Hotel de la Cite (more money but worth it).

The lower town is more interesting for me. They are close enough to walk. La cite is the main attraction but very touristy in my view. The square in the centre of the lower town (Place Carnot) has a number of bars/cafes on its periphery.

Yes Im with Cahill on this one, Id rather stay around place carnot and walk to la cite, it takes us around half an hour to walk but we do a lot of stopping to read menus out side cafes and taking pics and general noseying.
But both places are fantastic , im sure where ever you stay you will have a great time
