You might need to get the airport shuttle to Marseille%26#39;s main station, St Charles. From there you could go to:
Cassis a lovely little seaside town, nice beaches, nice walks along the cliffs, busy in summer but with French people. I stayed at Hotel Le Laurence, two stars, no frills, very clean and comfortable and reasonably priced. You can get the train from Marseille St Charles (about 20 minutes) to Cassis station then bus the two miles from the station to the town.
You could get the same train line further to Hyeres les Palmiers (about an hour and a quarter), stay in the town (I stayed in hotel les orangers, slightly delapidated but clean and comfortable) and get the bus each day down to the beaches or over to the Iles d%26#39;Or. Porquerolles is nearest.
Or go to Arles and do the roman ruins or Avignon with more roman ruins and it%26#39;s a great starting point for visiting the Luberon and villages like Gordes, Roussillon, l%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse. You can get to most of these by bus but it takes planning and there are no buses to Roussillon. ARe you hiring a car?
or go to St Remy (via Avignon) and see les Baux and Glanum and St Remy itself, which is exquisite, and the van Gogh asylum. St Remy is easiest if you are hiring a car.
Or you can get a coach from the airport to Aix en Provence and stay at Hotel le Mozart like I did and visit the cathedral, the fountains, the cafes and Cezanne%26#39;s gallery.
Just a few thoughts.

Like the sound of ChicChantal%26#39;s ideas for visiting Avignon and St Remy. Are they do-able using public transport, we are coming to Marseille in April and won%26#39;t be driving. We%26#39;d like to visit both areas for a day.
Thanks,
Patpot.

You can get from Marseille to Avignon without a problem, fairly regular local trains and also TGV. To get to St Remy you would need to take the train to Avignon and from there take the bus. Plan this carefully, as the best connections are early in the morning and late afternoon for people commuting. There may be direct buses from Marseille, can anyone advise?
Around St Remy, most things are in walking distance, but Les Baux is about five miles each way so a bit far for most people. There are buses from St R to Les Baux at some times of year (there were definitely buses last summer) but you might prefer to get a taxi for the last bit, or book a coach tour from Marseille.
