hello,
my fiance and i are deciding between these two villages during our stay in provence.
pros/cons of the two?
which is more picturesque?
(we know about the market in l%26#39;isle-sur-la-sorgue, but do not arrive until monday, so we will miss it).

Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is larger than Gordes and has a number of picturesque water wheels; Gordes is a beautifully perched village. We thought there was more to see in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

The length of your stay, when you are travelling and exactly what you are interested in seeing are all factors that should be used to determine where you will stay in Provence.
If you can be more explicit with regard to these issues it will be possible to provide you with better advice.
Hope to hear from you soon.

The two places are very different to one another, l%26#39;Isle is flat with much water around it while Gordes is perched. If you want to stay in a perched village I would stay in Roussillon anyway, I find Gordes a bit %26#39;blink and you%26#39;ve missed it%26#39;. HOWEVER I stayed in l%26#39;Isle for a week a coupla years ago and though it%26#39;s beautiful, it also virtually shuts down on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. If you%26#39;re arriving Monday, you%26#39;ll find it ahem quiet. Will you have a car?

They are 2 quite different places. One on the river so all on flat land and the other a high perched village.
Gordes is more picturesque although you could argue it is more picturesque to view it from outside than actually when you are in it.
Very stunning sight coming up to it.
L%26#39;isle sur la sougue is not that picturesque away from the river section and is certainly enhanced by the market. It does benefit from more restaurants and shops and is ideal if you are self catering.
Also if you are looking for hotel/restaurant accomodation it is better served.
Both places are convenient for looking at the rest of the region.
The south side of the N100 is attractive also and in parts a little quieter. eg Bonnieux.
I would concentrate more on the quality and type of accomodation and decide your preference around that as most anywhere in this region will be enjoyable.
Hope that helps
Neal
